Screens And Choices in German

Use simple German to talk calmly about screens, limits and preferences. Practise nicht (not) and kein (no/not any).

What you'll learn

  • Say when a device, game or video is not available or suitable.
  • Express a preference without judging someone else's choice.
  • Use nicht for 'not' and forms of kein for 'no' or 'not any'.

German phrases for screens and choices

  • Jetzt nicht.

    Not now.

A short, clear boundary. A gentle tone helps it sound calm.

  • Das Tablet ist nicht aufgeladen.

    The tablet is not charged.

    Place nicht before aufgeladen (charged).

  • Wir haben heute kein Internet.

    We have no internet today.

Use kein before Internet. Heute means 'today'.

  • Dieses Spiel ist nicht kostenlos.

    This game is not free.

Nicht kostenlos means 'not free of charge'.

  • Ich mag dieses Video nicht.

I do not like this video.

German does not add a word for 'do' here. Nicht comes after dieses Video.

  • Es gibt keine neuen Nachrichten.

    There are no new messages.

Es gibt means 'there is' or 'there are'. Use keine with plural Nachrichten.

  • Dein Handy ist nicht hier.

    Your phone is not here.

Handy is the everyday German word for a mobile phone. Dein addresses one person informally.

  • Wir haben keine Zeit fΓΌr einen Film.

We have no time for a film.

Zeit is feminine, so use keine. FΓΌr einen Film means 'for a film'.
