Not Quite Yet in German

Use nicht (not) and kein (no/not any) to set gentle limits and describe everyday moments. Noch nicht means “not yet,” while kein … mehr means “no … left.”

German phrases for not quite yet

  • Die Milch ist nicht heiß.

    The milk is not hot.

    Put nicht before the describing word heiß (hot).

  • Deine Flasche ist nicht leer.

    Your bottle is not empty.

    Deine means “your” with a feminine noun such as Flasche.

  • Teddy ist nicht hier.

    Teddy is not here.

    Nicht hier means “not here.” Teddy is used as the toy’s name.

  • Es ist noch nicht Schlafenszeit.

    It is not bedtime yet.

    Keep noch nicht together: it means “not yet.”

  • Es ist keine Milch mehr da.

    There is no milk left.

    Keine Milch mehr means there is no milk remaining. Da helps express that none is available.

  • Es sind keine Seifenblasen mehr da.

    There are no bubbles left.

    Use sind for plural things. Seifenblasen means soap bubbles.

  • Wir haben keine Bananen.

    We have no bananas.

    Keine goes before the plural noun Bananen.

  • Das ist nicht deine Tasse.

    That is not your cup.

    Use nicht before deine Tasse because you are saying it is not your cup, rather than saying there is no cup.

Nicht: saying “not”

In these patterns, nicht goes directly before the description, place or possessive phrase being negated.

Kein: saying “no” or “not any”

Use kein before nouns that would otherwise have ein/eine or no article. Its ending depends on the noun’s gender, number and role in the sentence. Haben takes an accusative object.

Not yet and none left

Noch nicht means something is not true or not happening yet. Kein … mehr means there is no more of something.

Deine Milch ist noch nicht heiß.

Your milk is not hot yet.

Noch nicht can also go before a describing word.

Wir haben keine Milch mehr.

We have no milk left.

Adding mehr shows that the milk has run out.

Das ist keine Tasse.

That is not a cup.

Compare nicht deine Tasse (not your cup) with keine Tasse (not a cup at all).
