When humour crosses a line in German
Discuss a teenager’s comedy choices without dismissing either humour or its impact. Scalar concessive clauses with so … auch let you acknowledge how clever, popular or well-intentioned something is while maintaining a boundary or a different judgement.
What you'll learn
- Use so + adjective or adverb to express “however” or “no matter how”.
- Place auch within the concessive clause and the finite verb at its end.
- Acknowledge a degree of something without accepting the conclusion it might seem to justify.
- Discuss dignity, intention and responsibility in a respectful, open-ended way.

Conceding a degree, not a conclusion
So + adjective or adverb introduces a scalar concession: “however …” or “no matter how …”. The speaker allows that a quality may be present to a high degree but rejects an expected consequence. Auch belongs to this concessive pattern; it does not mean “also” here.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Adjective: a quality | So + adjective + subject + auch + finite verb, … | So unterhaltsam der Auftritt auch ist, missfällt mir seine unterschwellige Botschaft. |
| Adverb: degree or manner | So + adverb + subject + auch + finite verb, … | So entschieden ich auch widerspreche, möchte ich trotzdem deine Interpretation hören. |
Word order and the following statement
Keep the finite verb last in the concessive clause. Other material can appear between the subject and auch. With a compound verb form, the non-finite part precedes the final finite verb. Separate the clauses with a comma. In the integrated pattern used here, the following main clause starts with its finite verb; trotzdem can reinforce the contrast but is not required.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
