Naming the one exception precisely in German
Use außer dass (“except that”) to identify one factual exception while keeping a broader assessment intact. The finite verb comes at the end of the exception clause. Unlike es sei denn (“unless”), außer dass states a fact rather than a condition that could invalidate the main statement.
What you'll learn
- Qualify a broad assessment with one precise factual exception.
- Place the finite verb at the end of an außer dass clause.
- Distinguish a factual exception from a condition introduced by es sei denn.
German phrases for naming the one exception precisely
Die Darstellung ist zutreffend, außer dass sie den letzten Wortwechsel auslässt.
The account is accurate, except that it omits the final exchange.
The account remains accurate overall; the exception concerns its completeness. Auslässt comes last.
Ich stimme deiner Zusammenfassung zu, außer dass mir die Gewichtung unpassend erscheint.
I agree with your summary, except that the emphasis seems misplaced.
The agreement stands, with a specific reservation about emphasis.
Nichts hat sich geändert, außer dass wir jetzt eine schriftliche Bestätigung haben.
Nothing has changed, except that we now have written confirmation.
The clause identifies the single factual change; haben comes last.
Die Fassungen sind identisch, außer dass eine eine Korrektur enthält.
The versions are identical, except that one includes a correction.
The two occurrences of eine are natural here: “one [version]” and “a [correction].”
Die Erklärung ist klar, außer dass der zentrale Begriff undefiniert bleibt.
The explanation is clear, except that the key term remains undefined.
The exception singles out one gap without dismissing the explanation.
Beide Vorschläge erscheinen umsetzbar, außer dass deiner weniger Vorbereitung erfordert.
Both proposals seem workable, except that yours needs less preparation.
Here the qualification highlights a practical difference, not a defect: both proposals remain workable.
Die Besprechung verlief wie erwartet, außer dass niemand die Schätzung anzweifelte.
The meeting went as expected, except that nobody challenged the estimate.
The exception describes what actually happened, not a hypothetical condition.
Ich habe nichts einzuwenden, außer dass die Formulierung unnötig streng klingt.
I have no objection, except that the wording sounds unnecessarily severe.
The reservation is confined to the wording; klingt closes the exception clause.

Preserve the assessment, isolate the exception
Place außer dass after a broad statement to specify one factual exception or reservation. The main assessment remains valid apart from this detail. Put a comma before außer dass, with no comma between außer and dass.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Broad assessment plus exception | Main statement, außer dass + subject + … + finite verb. | Die Erklärung ist klar, außer dass der zentrale Begriff undefiniert bleibt. |
| One exception to “nothing” | Nichts …, außer dass … | Nichts hat sich geändert, außer dass wir jetzt eine schriftliche Bestätigung haben. |
Keep the finite verb clause-final
Außer dass introduces a subordinate clause: its finite verb belongs at the end, not immediately after the subject. With an ordinary perfect-tense verb phrase, the finite auxiliary follows the participle.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simple verb | außer dass + subject + complements + finite verb | …, außer dass eine eine Korrektur enthält. |
| Perfect-tense verb phrase | außer dass + subject + … + participle + finite auxiliary | …, außer dass niemand die Schätzung angezweifelt hat. |
Factual exception versus invalidating condition
Außer dass means “except that” and presents the detail as a fact. Es sei denn means “unless” and introduces a condition under which the main statement would no longer hold. They are not interchangeable. In the common es sei denn pattern without dass, the following clause has main-clause word order.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Known factual qualification | Statement, außer dass + verb-final clause. | Der Plan bleibt unverändert, außer dass wir später anfangen. |
| Condition that could overturn the statement | Statement, es sei denn, + verb-second clause. | Der Plan bleibt unverändert, es sei denn, das Wetter macht uns einen Strich durch die Rechnung. |
