Naming the means rather than the reason in German

Use mittels plus genitive to name the tool, resource or procedure used to achieve an outcome. This precise but formal wording answers “By what means?” rather than “Why?”. In everyday conversation, mit or mithilfe often sounds more natural.

What you'll learn

  • Identify the means used by forming instrumental phrases with mittels plus genitive.
  • Distinguish a method or tool from the reason for an action.
  • Choose a less formal equivalent when explaining a method to family members.

German phrases for naming the means rather than the reason

  • Können wir mittels eines vorübergehend gültigen Codes Zugang erhalten?

Can we gain access by means of a temporary code?

Mittels names the means of access; eines vorübergehend gültigen Codes is genitive.

  • Sie überprüfen deine Identität mittels eines digitalen Zertifikats.

They verify your identity using a digital certificate.

The certificate is the resource used for verification, not the reason for checking.

  • Könnten wir den Unterschied mittels eines einfachen Schaubilds veranschaulichen?

Could we illustrate the difference using a simple diagram?

In conversation, mit einem einfachen Schaubild sounds less formal.

  • Die Ergebnisse wurden mittels eines standardisierten Verfahrens verglichen.

The results were compared using a standardised procedure.

Mittels can introduce a procedure as well as a physical or digital tool.

  • Lässt sich der Fehler mittels der Referenznummer zurückverfolgen?

Can the error be traced using the reference number?

Der Referenznummer is feminine genitive after mittels.

  • Wir könnten die Mehrdeutigkeit mittels eines Beispiels auflösen.

We could resolve the ambiguity by means of an example.

An example functions here as the means of making the meaning clear.

  • Das erklärt die Methode, nicht den zugrunde liegenden Grund.

That explains the method, rather than the underlying reason.

A method tells us how something is done; a reason tells us why.

  • Würde „mit einem Passwort“ hier weniger bürokratisch klingen?

Would 'using a password' sound less bureaucratic here?

Mit einem Passwort is the everyday alternative to mittels eines Passworts.

UseFormExample
Masculinemittels eines + adjective ending -en + noun with genitive endingmittels eines vorübergehend gültigen Codes
Neutermittels eines + adjective ending -en + noun with genitive endingmittels eines digitalen Zertifikats
Femininemittels der/einer + nounmittels der Referenznummer
Pluralmittels der + adjective ending -en + plural nounmittels der bereitgestellten Zugangscodes

Means, not reason

An instrumental phrase identifies what makes an action possible or how it is carried out. A causal phrase identifies why it happens. Choose according to the intended relationship, not simply because both phrases sound formal.

UseFormExample
Means: using what?mittels + genitiveWir überprüfen die Angaben mittels eines Zertifikats.
Reason: why?Causal phrase for contrastWir überprüfen die Angaben aufgrund eines Verdachts.

Choosing a natural register

Mittels suits technical instructions and formal explanations, but repeated use can sound bureaucratic. For everyday explanations, use mit plus dative for a tool or mithilfe plus genitive to emphasise assistance. Preserve the meaning of the method when rephrasing.

UseFormExample
Formalmittels + genitiveWir erhalten mittels eines Zugangscodes Zugang.
Everydaymit + dativeWir erhalten mit einem Zugangscode Zugang.
Emphasising helpmithilfe + genitiveWir erklären den Unterschied mithilfe eines Schaubilds.
