Different siblings, different responsibilities in German
Explain why siblings may need different expectations without treating either child as more deserving. Use wohingegen (“whereas”) to make an explicit contrast between two facts, with the finite verb at the end of the subordinate clause.
What you'll learn
- Contrast siblings’ needs, preferences and responsibilities using wohingegen.
- Place the finite verb at the end of a wohingegen clause.
- Distinguish a substantive contrast from two events happening at the same time.
- Discuss fairness without ranking siblings’ maturity.
German phrases for different siblings, different responsibilities
Deine Schwester braucht Erinnerungen, wohingegen du dich lieber selbst organisierst.
Your sister needs reminders, whereas you prefer managing independently.
Wohingegen contrasts different needs and preferences; organisierst closes the subordinate clause.
Du legst Wert auf Flexibilität, wohingegen deinem Bruder feste Abläufe Sicherheit geben.
You value flexibility, whereas your brother finds routines reassuring.
Feste Abläufe Sicherheit geben naturally expresses the reassurance provided by routines. The finite verb geben comes last.
Ich beurteile Fairness anhand der Umstände, wohingegen du die Regeln vergleichst.
I judge fairness by circumstances, whereas you compare the rules.
The contrast concerns two ways of judging fairness, not two simultaneous actions.
Sie leistet ihren Beitrag regelmäßig, wohingegen deiner von deinen Schichten abhängt.
Her contribution is regular, whereas yours depends on your shifts.
The two clauses contrast regularity with dependence on a work schedule; abhängt comes last.
Ihr beide wünscht euch Anerkennung, wohingegen keiner von euch ständig mit dem anderen verglichen werden möchte.
You both want recognition, whereas neither wants constant comparison.
Here the contrast is between wanting recognition and not wanting comparison, rather than between the siblings themselves. The finite verb möchte comes last.
Mir geht es um Verlässlichkeit, wohingegen dir anscheinend Gleichbehandlung wichtig ist.
My concern is reliability, whereas yours seems to be equality.
Gleichbehandlung conveys equality of treatment in this family context. Anscheinend preserves the tentative assessment of the child's concern.
Identische Pflichten wirken gerecht, wohingegen ausgewogene Verantwortlichkeiten vielleicht besser funktionieren.
Identical duties look fair, whereas balanced responsibilities may work better.
Wohingegen highlights the opposition between apparent fairness and what may work better in practice.
Können wir diese Unterschiede anerkennen, ohne zu bewerten, wer von euch reifer ist?
Can we acknowledge those differences without ranking your maturity?
A collaborative closing question. It does not require wohingegen because it does not set two facts against each other.

Wohingegen: an explicit contrast
Wohingegen means “whereas” and introduces a subordinate clause that contrasts with the preceding statement. Use it to oppose needs, preferences, priorities or circumstances. It is more formal than everyday contrast markers, so it suits a calm, carefully framed explanation.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pattern | Main clause, wohingegen + subject + other elements + finite verb. | Du brauchst Flexibilität, wohingegen dein Bruder feste Abläufe braucht. |
| Two different priorities | Priority A, wohingegen + priority B + finite verb. | Mir geht es um Verlässlichkeit, wohingegen dir Gleichbehandlung wichtig ist. |
| Meaning rather than timing | wohingegen = whereas, not “while” in the sense of “at the same time” | Identische Pflichten wirken gerecht, wohingegen ausgewogene Verantwortlichkeiten vielleicht besser funktionieren. |
Keep the finite verb at the end
Separate the wohingegen clause with a comma and place its finite verb last. If the clause contains a modal verb, the finite modal follows its infinitive complement. Keep the contrasted points clearly related; the two clauses need not have identical wording.
| Use | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Single finite verb | wohingegen du + other elements + vergleichst | Ich berücksichtige die Umstände, wohingegen du die Regeln vergleichst. |
| Modal verb | wohingegen + subject + other elements + infinitive + finite modal | Deine Schwester braucht Erinnerungen, wohingegen du selbstständig planen möchtest. |
| Avoid main-clause order | Use wohingegen du die Regeln vergleichst, not wohingegen du vergleichst die Regeln. | Ich beurteile Fairness anhand der Umstände, wohingegen du die Regeln vergleichst. |
