Passing on an exchange host's requests in German

Pass on an exchange host’s expectations as polite requests, not as demands or statements of fact. In formal indirect speech, möge or mögen plus an infinitive preserves the original request force. This wording suits written summaries and formal coordination; it can sound ceremonious in everyday family conversation.

What you'll learn

  • Relay polite requests using Konjunktiv I möge or mögen plus an infinitive.
  • Keep the original speaker’s request distinct from a factual claim.
  • Choose singular or plural forms and preserve the intended people and actions.
  • Maintain a welcoming tone when passing on household and exchange arrangements.

German phrases for passing on an exchange host's requests

  • Die Koordinatorin bittet, jede Familie möge ihre Kontaktdaten bestätigen.

The coordinator asks that each family confirm its contact details.

Jede Familie takes singular möge. The confirmation is requested, not reported as already happening.

  • Die Mutter unseres Gastes bittet, wir mögen ihr bei Schwierigkeiten Bescheid geben.

Our guest's mother asks that we let her know about any difficulties.

Wir mögen … Bescheid geben passes on her request to us.

  • Der Gastgeber bittet, Sie mögen besondere Ernährungsbedürfnisse im Voraus angeben.

The host asks that you mention any dietary requirements beforehand.

Sie is formal “you,” appropriate when addressing a parent formally. This makes the request inclusive of allergies and other dietary needs.

  • Die Organisatorin bittet, alle mögen die vereinbarte Ankunftszeit einhalten.

The organiser asks that everyone respect the agreed arrival time.

Alle takes plural mögen; einhalten conveys keeping to the agreed time.

  • Die Lehrerin bittet, dein Austauschpartner möge in die Gespräche einbezogen werden.

The teacher asks that your exchange partner be included in discussions.

Dein addresses the teenager informally. Möge marks inclusion as something requested, not as an established fact.

  • Die Familie bittet, wir mögen alle ungewohnten Gepflogenheiten im Haushalt erklären.

The family asks that we explain any unfamiliar household customs.

The request concerns explaining customs that may be unfamiliar to the guest.

  • Die Koordinatorin bittet, etwaige Änderungen mögen direkt mitgeteilt werden.

The coordinator asks that any changes be communicated directly.

Änderungen takes plural mögen. Etwaige means “any that may arise.”

  • Könntest du das als höfliche Bitte und nicht als Forderung weitergeben?

Could you relay that as a polite request rather than a demand?

A practical prompt to preserve the original warmth; this is itself a direct request.

Preserving a request in indirect speech

Use a reporting phrase such as bittet followed by möge or mögen and a bare infinitive, without zu. This presents an action as requested rather than as a fact. Here mögen does not mean “like.”

UseFormExample
Original polite imperativeBitte + imperative„Bitte bestätigen Sie Ihre Kontaktdaten.“
Reported requestbittet, + subject + möge/mögen + … + infinitiveDie Koordinatorin bittet, jede Familie möge ihre Kontaktdaten bestätigen.

Choosing möge or mögen

Match the form to the subject inside the reported request, not to the person making it. For the subjects used here, third-person singular takes möge; wir, plural subjects and formal Sie take mögen. Although mögen looks identical to the indicative, bittet and the request context make its function clear.

UseFormExample
Singular subjectjede Familie / dein Austauschpartner + möge + infinitiveDie Lehrerin bittet, dein Austauschpartner möge an dem Gespräch teilnehmen.
Plural subjectwir / alle + mögen + infinitiveDie Organisatorin bittet, alle mögen die Ankunftszeit einhalten.
Formal addressSie + mögen + infinitiveDer Gastgeber bittet, Sie mögen Ihre Ernährungsbedürfnisse angeben.

Word order and tone

Without dass, place möge or mögen after the reported subject and the infinitive at the end. With dass, place möge or mögen last, after the infinitive. Both patterns are formal. Bittet explicitly frames the message as a request; möge alone does not guarantee a warm tone.

UseFormExample
Without dassbittet, + subject + mögen + … + infinitiveDie Familie bittet, wir mögen die Gepflogenheiten erklären.
With dassbittet, dass + subject + … + infinitive + mögenDie Familie bittet, dass wir die Gepflogenheiten erklären mögen.
