German phrases for sports club fun

  • Du kannst schnell rennen.

    You can run fast.

    Use du when speaking to one child.

  • Ich kann den Ball fangen.

    I can catch the ball.

    Fangen means to catch. The action verb goes at the end.

  • Kannst du springen?

    Can you jump?

    Put kannst before du to ask a yes/no question.

  • Wir können zusammen spielen.

    We can play together.

    Zusammen means together.

  • Du kannst das Netz noch nicht erreichen.

    You cannot reach the net yet.

    Noch nicht means not yet: the skill may develop later.

  • Ich kann kein Rad schlagen.

    I cannot do a cartwheel.

    Ein Rad schlagen means to do a cartwheel. Here, ein becomes kein to make the phrase negative.

  • Kannst du den Ball kicken?

    Can you kick the ball?

    Kicken is a common word for kicking a ball.

  • Wir können hier nicht schwimmen.

    We cannot swim here.

    Hier means here. Nicht makes the statement negative.

Statements and questions

In these statements, put kann, kannst or können after the subject. In yes/no questions, put it first. The action verb stays in its infinitive form at the end.

Cannot and cannot yet

Use nicht to make an action negative. Use noch nicht for not yet. When negating a noun with ein, use kein instead.
